Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever blocked the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will personally create this new product within a personal series highlighting causes the company was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur announced through social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
âI'm doing what they couldn't,â Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. âI'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.â
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match those of the Palestinian flag â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder indicated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that âMy partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
âMy conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
