Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Forged the Modern World
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to the automated timber mill invented by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this speedy automated saw, which turned logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original True Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component converted the circular motion into up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts in order that they acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward motion and advancing with each return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental parts.”
