A group of six quirky but doughty children encounter the trail of a vast and fearsome supernatural malevolence that has infiltrated our existence from the deepest abyss of shadow. They are compelled to wage a lifelong battle battling it, facing horror after horror in the struggle.

An Echoing Storyline with a Distinctive Approach

This is the plot, in essence, of the master of horror’s iconic book It (a standout in his career; no arguments). It parallels of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s new chilling tome, in which a close-knit group call forth the ancient, utterly malevolent beast the Sorrowful Monarch from the Endless Night to help them defeat some villains. As one might expect, their supernatural ritual has unintended consequences.

Acknowledging a Family Heritage

Joe Hill launched his profession striving diligently to remain separate from his renowned parent, publishing under the pen name he maintains to this day and avoiding meeting his agent (he exhibits a striking resemblance to his parent). However, in his newest work, he fully acknowledges it. Several quotes that deliberately echo some of King’s most famous (“The man in black fled across the desert …”); a scene that recalls a recurring theme in King’s works (a game of puzzles). In this epic story, Joe Hill takes pleasure in his heritage, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Main Characters

Focusing on the companions: five of them are students at the made-up this academic setting in the New England state. We have Arthur, bookish and intelligent, cracking ancient puzzles in his spare time; the character Colin, wealthy, sharp, and inclined to bulldoze obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the stunning Allie herself. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but assumes a vital role of their group as they dabble, partly convinced, somewhat doubtful, in supernatural practices.

The Pivotal Ceremony

Our hero becomes, due to circumstances beyond his control, compelled to pilfer prized manuscripts from his beloved college library by a bunch of local criminals. This tears at his bookish heart, especially when he’s forced to acquire the collection’s foremost and unsettling work: the logbook of practitioner this enigmatic character (condemned “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the cover is fashioned from his hide). The intrepid group read the journal, discover they could summon what the author references as a “arrogant beast to help Arthur out with his blackmail problem – and spend the rest of the novel reaping the consequences. This ancient entity will indeed rid them of those annoying regional antagonists, but they are required to pick a different victim every twelve months or become his victim themselves. As our protagonist states: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is more dragons.”

Narrative Versatility and Imaginative Breadth

Moving through four decades, the author shifts with natural fluency across narrative styles: as the allies attempt to deal with the predicament they find themselves in by, variously, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to immolate, or seeking means to kill the dragon themselves, we transition from suspense to shadowy tale, clandestine torment to love story to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a adventure narrative, far beneath the surface beneath this UK region, a section sprinkled with the fantasy maestro that was gloriously terrifying.

An Expansive Tapestry of Dread and Courage

The novel features trolls – those living under bridges and digital trolls, genuinely frightening and superbly depicted. We see enchanted blades and deceptions, pulse-pounding sequences of bravery and ones of dreadful evil, both human and extraterrestrial. This is a remarkable achievement: a horror novel that is chiefly a paean to the creative spirit, and to love and friendship. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says the wealthy student as the allies assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their dragon into existence with the power of their thoughts.

As Hill puts it in his epigraph: “Here be dragons”. Do not overlook this.
